Hi Viet_Tran,

Thank you for your honest feed back.

This has helped me to validate my own assessment.

Dear l9singh:

I read in your letter below that you "I have technical accounting knowledge". Does such thing exist as Technical Accounting? Or do we have only accounting? (The German would say: Viet, Spass bei Seite", translation into English: Let us be serious).

If you follow the publicized information on this forum regarding SAP FICO and corresponding discussion, you must be able to put yourself in a real position to answer your own question of whether "Is my current experience sufficient to be considered seriously by an employer?"

If you would prefer a straight answer from me: I am afraid to say: No! On the market you must be able to compete with other SAP experts of (much) higher caliber.

On the other hand, if you plan to pursue a serious career in the specific field of SAP that is desirable to you (here SAP FICO), you are on the right track. What is missing, at the current time in your particular case, is in-depth knowledge and other skill sets, SAP and Non-SAP related, that you must possess in order to represent yourself as a person who could (or must) be "seriously considered by an employer".

My recommendation to you therefore is: Continue doing on a daily basis what you plan. Put in all the effort of mental and physical nature into it. And with a good and reasonable hope, you eventually and finally will arrive.

I wish Your Family and You a successful Year of 2012!

Regards,

Viet Tran

Hi,

I did not get any replies to my question. Not sure if it got lost in the storm.

This gives me a chance to rephrase the question if it helps to solicit answers:

Is my current experience sufficient to be considered seriously by an employer?
Is the TERP10 and IFRS workshop a good starting point?

SAP MM is a good module (core module) of SAP ECC (ERP) and always have good prospects. Make sure to learn well ( otherwise you will not succeed) and have patience to get into SAP consulting, which sometime can take time. Also make sure you are enjoying SAP MM subject matter. If you like SAP then will be good at it and you will succeed in this field. SAP is a excellent field but require lot of hardwork, knowledge of SAP and domain expertise. something which is excellent cannot be easy (rose garden) that is normally the case.

Thank you,

Dear Sulaiman Ashraf Kadri:

Based on your description, I assume that you are professional successful in your daily business. It appears that you are on the right (and fast) track toward your professional future, and your career does not deliver any sign of concern.

I therefore do not see any urgency for you to saddle up another horse for yourself. And do not forget that you cannot ride two horses at the same time.

The ROI of your endeavor into SAP is not the one to be recommended, UNLESS you solely want to engage your mind into SAP to expand your knowledge, and then have a clear vision about how to use it as a powerful tool in your professional tool box; otherwise you sidetrack your career for no acceptable reason. You do it, you will be made responsible and liable for the caused damage of your career that is possibly beyond the point of being repairable.

(By the way, I enjoy doing correspondence with you as a real person with a real name. A person who must be hiding behind a mask or anonymity, for any reason or purpose, does not deserve a direct and meaningful conversation.)

I wish You a New and Successful Year of 2012!

Regards,

Viet Tran

Subject: What do I need to know to start a career in SAP

Friday, December 30, 2011
Dear Wmabon:
Your letter bleeds my heart for you.
The past nine years must be hard for you in a life of a sales man who cannot reach the quotas. It is not only about the money alone, but about the loss of self-esteem. I can feel it with you.
Let me try to answer your three questions, starting with the second one.
"Are there any companies out there that will take a chance with someone as green as me?"
Realistically, I do not see any reason for why any company in real life would reach out for you. The principle of life in business is almost always based on the balance of exchange; and you do not possess, at the current time, any of the items that are sellable to them.
"Are there any websites that you guys recommend to receive some free or inexpensive training?"
For this question I do see tiny silver line for you. There is a huge number of information sources on line for you to explore, to accumulate (missing and needed) knowledge to prepare yourself for a possible career in ERP area, such as SAP. And for your current state of knowledge, the majority of these information sources are free of charges.
If you work hard on these sources, you will recognize that you substantially can increase your knowledge in an acceptable time period.
"What I need to know now is how do I get started?"
The following steps are recommended.
Stick with your current job to have an acceptable living standard. You state that "I have some friends that are SAP consultants and they love what they do and I've learned some things from our conversations and books that I've read." I assume that your "friends" are there for you in this difficult time. Ask them for their insider's knowledge, understanding of SAP. Ask them for a chance to volunteer your work without payment (on a part time basis, for example). Ask them about whether they can provide you with a change to get into SAP so that you can learn first hand about SAP
I wish You a New and Better Year 2012!

Regards,

Viet Tran

The question is what do you want to do in SAP? Do you want to become an SAP consultant or do you just want to broaden your knowledge of SAP in the context of your existing job and career? What modules of SAP have you used? What experience with SAP do you already have? How long? We cannot advise you unless we know what your aims are.

Roy
