Re: [sap-career] SAP Sales & Distribution Job Age Limit & Job Opportunities at 53

Roy,

I was drawing his attention that a perception exists (at least in India) that entry age is below 40 (preferably below 35) for SAP. Yes, there are exceptions to it but this is my experience (or rather the experience as shared with me of those who have attended my academies).

Since I have chosen to be self-employed, I do not know whether I would even get a job, if I tried. So it is the experience that others have shared.

I do not doubt your experience but probably it would be more difficult to enter SAP at 48 today than when you entered. I, too, entered the field at 45 but participants at academies (with really good domain experience) have consistently reported difficulties in getting a first break. They have their own network, are willing to relocate, work under a person younger to them, all that. But age seems to be against them. Of course, due to legal reasons, recruiters do not state this explicitly.

It is a different experience when you are already in. Its difficult to get in was what I stated.

Anyway, mine is not the only valid point of view. I only hope the divergent views help Venkat reach an informed decision.

Regards,
Deepak

Deepak,

I have to say I disagree with you. I got into SAP at the age of 48 and now, 15 years later, I am more in demand than ever because I am now an acknowledged expert in my field. I have a friend and colleague who is over 70 and still going strong (also in FI-CO). Age can be a barrier if you let it be, or if applying for a permanent job where employers only want 25 year-olds but with 20 years experience. Maybe they are cheaper than us oldies and maybe an employer thinks we will turn up our toes before he has gotten his money's worth out of us, but as a consultant age, maturity and experience actually seem to be advantages.

Regards, Roy
