RE: [sap-career] Which module I should start with Telecom domain experience

There's a subsection of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) that deals with telephones that usually requires technical experience that can be somewhat hard to find in the marketplace and therefore makes a great niche. It's called SAP Business Communications Management. This area deals with integrating phones with SAP for multi-channel contact routing, Interactive Voice Response (IVR) services, personnel directory and presence services, as well as other things. It sounds to me like you're a technical type person. If you have a systems administration type background where you are used to looking at hardware and designing solutions, you might consider starting with Netweaver System Administration (a.k.a. Basis) but target CRM (and SAP BCM) specifically. One reason there aren't too many folks that are in this niche is because there's not a clear path to get there. Just to get into this area you'll probably need to take all of the Netweaver administration classes as well as the CRM classes. Typical Netweaver admin knowledge helps when configuring BCM, but not really. The bulk of what an SAP Basis person does won't help with BCM. Being a functional person in CRM really won't help other than knowing how the IVR or whatnot works from a functional level. So while you might need those two certifications to get hired, it will probably be somewhat discouraging as you go through the training because most of it won't seem applicable to what you want to do in the long run.

Another route would be to look for a consulting company who specializes in CRM and sell them on your telecom knowledge. They might be able to just teach you enough SAP to supplement your telecom knowledge and book you out that way.

If you are NOT on the technical side, then you still might want to focus on CRM first. I normally don't recommend that folks start with CRM directly because if you're background is in general sales, it's better to start with SD and grow into CRM. Because you have 6 years in the telecomm business already, however, you may be able to skip the SD part and focus on the telecom specific portions of CRM. In addition, SAP has an industry product called SAP for Telecommunications which deals with all of the business processes that are someone unique to the telecommunications industry (telecom style billing, customer service, dealer management, etc). That would be a good route if you're more on the business side.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
--Tom
