Re: [sap-career] Does End-User Experience really Count as Zero?

Hi Kate!

I heard from various sources that many SAP Consultants start off as
end-users and migrate to SAP implementation afterwards with-in the same
organization they work. They build good rapport with their seniors and the
HR of the company and afterwards through the unofficial cooperation of
their seniors and the HR, they migrate to implementation. In India their
past experience as end-user is given about 25% weight-age (for example if
an employee has worked as an end-user for 2 years, his experience counted
as 6 months) and there is zero or very negligible salary hike post their
transfer to implementation. With-in the same company, migration from
end-user to implementation happens only the lower levels and not on the
middle and higher levels.

But once transferred to implementation (or support for that matter), many
opportunities open up and the employee can grows at an amazing pace,
provided he performs very well.

Coming to the issue of weight-age. The weight-age criteria applies only
when the employee is migrating from one job profile to another with-in
same company. The percentage of weight-age also varies from company to
company. If one applies for SAP consulting job in another company after
working for 10 years as a SAP end user in one company, then they will be
counted as a fresher with zero consulting experience. The weight-age factor
comes to play only on the salary aspect but not on the job or designation
aspect. For example a person having 10 years end-user experience will given
a salary equivalent to the salary given to SAP consultant who is 2 -3 years
old in consulting, but the designation and job responsibilities will be
that of a trainee or junior consultant and not of Project Manager or Team
Lead who is 10 years old in consulting. Hence be prepared to compromise on
your salary as well as your designation if you are migrating from end-user
to implementation.

Since you have 10+ years rich domain experience, first find a job as an
end-user in a company which has implemented SAP for the operations in the
domain, you are into. Build a good rapport with your seniors and the HR
there and keep a constant watch on the vacancies in the implementation (or
support) department. When the adequate opportunity arises, convince your
seniors and the company HR to migrate you to implementation (or support).
This is not always very easy as HR policies may vary from from company to
company, hence do a lot of research beforehand before taking any decision.

Hope you find this useful.

If have any other issues regarding this, please share.

Subject: Does End-User Experience really Count as Zero?

Hi Guys,

There was a recent post entitled "SAP Trainer or SAP End User Job" here from a guy (or so I presume) in India.

Few answers had mentioned that _end_user_experience_did_not_count with employers when hiring for consultants.

I wonder could somebody tell me what the situation is in Europe (Ireland) as I have 10+ yrs domain experience and a good brain and lot of work in me, but find difficult to even get shortlisted.

May this all be not enough?

Can I do anything to improve my chances?

Thanks,

Kate
