Hi Carlos, Interesting. Most Germans these days have some English - well-educated Germans speak English fluently and it is "chic" to do so. Most new words in the German language are of English or US origin. So I can see why the German dude asked WHY? English is very widely used in business. I was doing some work for a client this week in Hamburg which involved 4 of us working together as a team. One guy was from South Africa, I am an Englishman and the other two were Germans. First question was "what language shall we work in?" and we decided on German, but still used the occasional English expression because in business these days you just do. For you, Carlos, Italian or Portuguese should be relatively easy because they are Latin-based, like Spanish (the so-called "Romance" languages which include Romanian). Portuguese has a lot of Arabic influences in it but a Spanish-speaker can still get along in it pretty well. I worked with a Portuguese logistics consultant some years ago who spoke fluent Spanish and beautiful English in addition to Portuguese. I understand spoken and written Italian and Spanish because I studied Latin at school and speak fluent French, and they are all related. I struggle a bit with Portuguese because of the foreign (Arabic) words, but with a little time and effort I could learn it. German on the other hand is hard to learn as I already said, and so are the related languages like Dutch, Flemish and the Friesian dialects from which English came. And don't get me started on the German dialects - Bavarian or Hessisch or Schwabian are impossible to get your head or your tongue around. Best Regards, Roy Roy Brookes FFA, FInstBA, SAP?
