Dear ps_12345:

As announced in a previous letter, here are my answers to your request:

Your question:
"1) What roles (e.g. sales, business development etc) can an SAP presales guy move into after working 1-1.5 years in presales solutioning? Please also comment on long term horizon say 5,10 years."

If you are successful in sales, you already demonstrate, in general, that you possess, besides your expert knowledge, the bird-eye-view, which is a crucial item to move you into circle of management. If you enjoy the bird-eye view in your daily business, you have learned the process of dealing with real people and how to convince the people such as decision makers in their organization to follow your suggestion, recommendation and to convince them to make a large payment based on your recommendation and promises. You have learned and practiced to complete a whole process of selling in good and productive sense of the term. These are a few but crucial characteristics of a woman / man on the management level. How successful would you be in the mid and long term perspective? You bring in your capability to the party and you will be recognized. Should you be in needs of a successful example as motivation, look at the CEO's of SAP; and you will find similarity in their professional development.

Your question:
"2) Should one try to move into SAP functional stuff or move towards bid management, business development etc after working in presales? "

Your thinking and your personal, professional preference must be able to answer your question.

Your question:
"3) Please suggest your views in terms of growth, package, onsite etc for both presales and functional roles."

Same answer as under your question number 2. A quick look at the market demands for sales and functional positions will clarify the situation.

Your statement:
"I want to move into senior management positions rather than sticking to technological stuff wherein i will work on same SAP screen for 1-2 years.I know people who are working on SAP for very long time and they say that it i very difficult to understand everything as it is very vast."

SAP therefore is successful because it is a capable software package. World class companies are the ones that deliver and cement, on a daily basis in their world wide business, the recognition. Certainly, you must have the understanding before you can discuss and you emphasize "SAP is very vast". On the other hand, you must not understand everything in SAP into details to convince. If you wish to move onto the level of management, SAP related understanding as expert knowledge is important but other NON-SAP related are more crucial in determination of your success. Should you need detail knowledge that is not available to you, you can call in expert, but you must be the woman / man who possesses NON-SAP related abilities to control the process in which you must lead.

I welcome you to further discussion if it is necessary; otherwise I wish you to be confident on your way and you will be successful. Work Hard and Play Right!

Regards,

Viet Tran

Subject: future track SAP Presales vis a vis SAP functional consultant

I hold a Btech and MBA degree and working in India.I have around 4 years of pre MBA experience and around 6 months post MBA.I am working in one ot the top IT cos of India (both pre and post MBA).Earlier I was in technology stream and now I am in consulting stream.

Post my MBA i got traned in SAP MM for the role of functional consultant. However i was not getting any project in functional role post training for quite some time so I moved into SAP presales role(more MBAish kind of work) .I do not want to stick to technological stuff plus this SAP pre sales role is of high visibility.I believe that presales work is always a big value add to your resume.

I have a few questions and would be greatful if somebody can guide me.It will help me decide my future path.

1) What roles (eg sales, business development etc) can an SAP presales guy move into after working 1-1.5 years in presales solutioning? Please also comment on long term horizon say 5,10 years.

2) Should one try to move into SAP functional stuff or move towards bid management, business develpoment etc after working in presales?

3) Please suggest ur views in terms of growth, package, onsite etc for both presales and functional roles.

I want to move into senior management positions rather than sticking to technological stuff wherein i will work on same SAP screen for 1-2 years.I know people who are working on SAP for very long time and they say that it i very difficult to understand everything as it is very vast.

Thanks in advance.
