That is bad advice, sorry. ABAP and the stuff he has been developing are two very different worlds. Also ABAP involves more than programming. You have to understand business processes and be able to discuss these with functional consultants. Just because someone can program in a language does not mean he can automatically become and ABAP programmer and to say what you said just gives him false hopes.
